THE return of a night cycling event on an interstate highway was greeted by record participation after a two-year hiatus because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The recent seventh RHB Lekas Highway Ride along the Lekas Highway E21 drew over 5,600 local and international cyclists from 26 countries, including France, Germany, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Australia and the United States.

The closed highway night cycling event is a collaboration between RHB Banking Group and Lebuhraya Kajang-Seremban Sdn Bhd (Lekas), a subsidiary of IJM Corporation Bhd’s Toll Division.

The 120km race was flagged off by Works Ministry secretary-general Datuk Wira Wan Ahmad Uzir Wan Sulaiman.

The event also had participants as young as 10 years old and included a push bike session for children between two and eight years.

RHB Banking Group group managing director and group chief executive officer Mohd Rashid Mohamad said, “The RHB Lekas Highway Ride continues to be among the most anticipated events on the cycling calendar.”

Lekas, the dual three-lane highway that connects Kajang in Selangor to Seremban in Negri Sembilan, had ensured a full road closure for the duration of the event within a fully LED-lit highway circuit. IJM Corporation chief executive officer and managing director Liew Hau Seng said, “We are glad that our highway concessions are being used as platforms to bring sports enthusiasts together.”
