‘Youths invited to be part of GE15’

THOSE who want to be part of the country’s 15th General Election (GE15) process can register as volunteers.

Penang Barisan National youth chief Lim Swee Bok said the party welcomed observers as well as polling/counting agents (Paca).

Lim says they welcome observers and polling/counting agents.Lim says they welcome observers and polling/counting agents.

“They are welcome to sign up, especially those aged between 18 and 21.

“We are keen to expose the younger generation to the election process,” he said.

A Paca has to volunteer his or her services to election candidates or political parties.

Lim, who is also Penang MCA youth chief, said the party would provide training to those who wanted to become Paca in GE15.

Among the duties of polling agents is observing the processes during nomination day, campaigning, early voting and polling day.

Counting agents have to ensure the counting process of the votes is done correctly.

Lim said for GE15, at least 200 to 300 volunteers were needed for each parliamentary constituency, depending on the size.

“With additional voters from the Undi18 group, there will be more voting channels in each district voting centre (PDM) compared to GE14,” he said.

He added that the party was still looking for volunteers and those interested could apply at Penang MCA headquarters or through the respective party operation centres.

DAP’s Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng said the party was also recruiting Paca for GE15.

“We have been actively looking since early this year and training will be conducted soon,” he said.

Any Malaysian aged 18 and above can apply to become a Paca for the party.

Teh said for each parliamentary constituency, between 100 and 300 Paca were needed to be on duty on polling day.

Most of the volunteers so far have been party members but the positions are open to anyone, he said.

When asked if the party was looking for drivers to ferry voters to polling stations, Teh said this would be up to individual candidates.

“Usually, party members will take voters to polling stations,” he said.
