Promoting greater understanding

Lum: We hope to promote disability awareness within society through this Lovely Disabled Day.

IT WILL be a day of activities at Perdana Botanical Garden in Kuala Lumpur when Lovely Disabled Home (LDH) hosts a “Lovely Disabled Day” on Dec 3.

This year, the theme is “Hope Above the Rainbow”.

LDH founder Lum Kok Kiang said the home organised the annual event – which had been held since 2007 – with the aim of bringing awareness to the public about disabled-friendly facilities that were needed in addition to encouraging more job opportunities for the disabled.

“The event is organised for people with disabilities (PWD), to unbind the limitations of their disability and enable them to participate in society, while encouraging the public to volunteer and help those in need,” he said at a press conference to announce the upcoming event.

Lum said the biggest problem encountered by the PWD was not their own physical or mental ability, but the limitation of facilities and how society viewed them.

“We hope to promote disability awareness within society through this Lovely Disabled Day,” he added.

Also present at the press conference was event organising chairman Kayson Ng and Loh Y. Lun who was representing Kampung Tunku assemblyman Lim Yi Wei.

Loh said the “Lovely Disabled Day” was a good way for the disabled community to meaningfully engage and share their experiences with the public at large.

Lovely Disabled Home hopes to welcome 100 visitors who will have the chance to reach out and interact with members of the disabled community, which will allow the visitors to better understand the latter.

The visitors, whom the organisers address as “volunteers”, will be provided with information that will help them interact with the disabled and extend assistance more effectively.

The home hopes this event will promote public understanding of disabilities.

Lum said the “Lovely Disabled Day” would start at 8am and end at 2pm. There will be a RM20 entry fee per person who will be provided lunch and an event T-shirt.
