A GREENING event called “Shah Alam Trees for Life” was held to mark the 22nd anniversary of Shah Alam’s city status.

Some 70 trees were planted at Elmina Central Park in Elmina West during the event held by Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) in collaboration with Sime Darby Property Bhd.

They comprised 15 species of shady and fruit trees such as meranti langgong, keruing kerut, tampoi, kapur, perah and pauh kijang.

Some 100 employees from both organisations were involved in the tree-planting exercise, led by Shah Alam deputy mayor Mohd Rashidi Ruslan and Edward Heng who heads Sime Darby business unit one.

MBSA Corporate and Public Relations Division head Shahrin Ahmad said in a statement that the programme started in 2010.

“A total of 67 tree-planting initiatives had been held this year, involving 177,899 trees planted by 22,256 volunteers.

“We are committed to making Shah Alam a low-carbon city by 2030,” he said.

Shahrin added that other efforts to realise that goal included car-free days, community gardens, Smart Selangor bus service and dedicated bicycle tracks.
