THOUSANDS thronged the streets of Sibu town to watch the traditional annual Christmas parade which made a comeback.
The event, which started in the 1970s, could not be held for the past two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
About 8,000 people made a beeline to Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang to witness the parade organised by the Association of Churches Sarawak (ACS) Sibu.
A festive mood was in the air as people of all races and religions admired the colourful and bright floats while Christians shared the spirit of Christmas by singing hymns.
Some 20 floats made their way from the town square to Jalan Bujang Suntong, Jalan Pulau, Jalan Channel, Jalan Mission, Jalan Kampung Nyabor, Jalan Central, Jalan Wong Nai Siong, Jalan Kampung Nyabor and Raminway before stopping at Jalan Kampung Nyabor.
The participating churches included Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM), 611 Bread of Life, Living Waters, Sarawak Full Gospel, City Harvest Fellowship, Kasih Agape, Baptist Church Sibu Jaya and Calvary Bible Presbyterian.
ACS Sibu president Reverend Jonathan Lau Puong Fuang said in his address that he was thankful the parade was finally back.
“I am full of joy because this year, we can gather physically again for the Sibu Christmas Parade,” said Lau.
Also presenting his Christmas message was BEM Sibu’s Reverend Yahya Ating while Bishop of Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference Bishop Dr Lau Hui Ming gave a sermon. – By ANDY CHUA
