TAIWANESE food is gaining popularity and the Taiwan Confectionery Festival gave Malaysians an opportunity to sample processed foods and pastries and take them home.

Products of least 10 Taiwanese brands were represented at the event held at Sunway Velocity mall, Kuala Lumpur.

“Taiwan’s pearl milk tea, sun cake, pineapple crisps, alpine tea are popular among Malaysians,” said Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia economic division director James Y.C. Chang. The festival enabled Taiwanese food lovers to purchase foods they craved without flying abroad.

Taiwan External Trade Development Council Director Eva Peng said: “I would recommend the Malaysians not to miss the Taiwanese mochi, pineapple crisp and sun cake as they are the most famous foods which are also the favourites of adults, children and the elderly in Taiwan”.

China Airlines Malaysia branch general manager James Tang recommended the pineapple crisps and taro cake as gifts, as these items as so well associated with Taiwan that they are found in every duty free store in the international airport.

The event was organised by Taiwan’s bureau of foreign trade that’s under the country’s ministry of economic affairs, as part of a programme to promote Taiwanese food in supermarkets or shopping malls in overseas markets such as the United States, Britain, Canada, Europe, Australia and Southeast Asia. — By CHAN MEI YEE
