MPSepang looks at assessment hike

SEPANG Municipal Council (MPSepang) is preparing a proposal to increase assessment by about 20%, says its president Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain.

A council-appointed valuer, he said, has reviewed the new tax rate based on a one-year period, which will be presented to the state government.

“Assessment in the municipality has not been increased for more than 20 years.

“Based on the increase in prices of goods and salaries, the tax collected now does not commensurate with the rising cost of services rendered by the council.

“However, the increase will not be implemented this year as MPSepang is still working on the details,” he said.

Abd Hamid was speaking after the swearing-in ceremony of MPSepang deputy president Muhammad Shah Osmin and 23 councillors for the 2023 term.

The councillors comprise eight from PKR, five from Amanah and 10 from DAP.

Six of them are new faces – Naharanuar Ayob (Zone Putra Perdana), Khairil Izzat Nordin (Zone Desa Pinggiran Putra), Sukumaran Krishnan (Zone Timah Langat), Razali Mat Pol (Zone Banghuris), Saifullizam Miswan (Zone Sepang Utara) and Dr Mohd Faridz Ismail (Zone Desa Putra).

After the ceremony, Abd Hamid advised councillors to understand MPSepang’s objectives as well as government policies.

“Councillors must be sensitive to the public’s needs and interests while contributing ideas and expertise to improve quality of service,” he added.
