Proposal for joint panel to cut red tape

A JOINT committee should be set up to address infrastructure issues within the Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) jurisdiction.

Sri Pulai Zone councillor Joseph Fu (pic), who proposed this, said the committee should include all councillors and representatives from agencies and departments from both the Federal and Johor governments.

“Presently, we have to go through so many channels and it normally takes months or sometimes even years to attend to the complaints lodged by councillors and ratepayers,’’ said Fu, who added that a joint committee would help cut red tape.

He said the relevant agencies and departments needed to act fast to address the issues, such as road maintenance, taking into account the city status of Iskandar Puteri.

Fu said for instance, he had brought up the issue of the two sharp bends at Jalan Johor Baru-Gelang Patah at KM20 from the Taman Ungku Tun Aminah bridge to KM25.5 in Pendas.

“The authorities need to do something about the sharp bends here as there have been many road accidents including three casualties last year,” he said.

Fu said another road which needed attention was the potholed stretch near the Urban Forest Park at Mutiara Rini leading to Kampung Baru Lima Kedai.

“Locals especially motorcyclists use this road daily to commute to Singapore for work and there are many cases of them falling after riding into the potholes,’’ he said.

Fu said the maintenance of the road was still under the developer as it had yet to hand over the stretch to MBIP, hence the council was unable to do anything.

Mayor Datuk Haffiz Ahmad said the council would look into the proposal and hold meetings with the relevant authorities including from the state and Federal Government to address the upgrading of public infrastructure in Iskandar Puteri.
