Report obstruction of parking bays, public urged

Besides issuing summons for illegal parking, enforcement officers also patrol commercial areas daily to check on obstructions placed at public parking bays.

THE obstruction of public parking bays is not only happening in commercial places but also residential areas, particularly at stratified properties, says Subang Jaya mayor Datuk Johary Anuar.

“There are limited parking spaces at certain stratified residential properties or high-rise buildings. So some residents resort to placing obstructions on public parking bays to book spots for their vehicles,” explained Johary.

“This is an offence under Subang Jaya City Council’s (MBSJ) Order 36 Road Transport Order (Parking Allocation), which states that no one can obstruct or cause obstruction of any place or parking space.

“If a person is found to have committed such as offence, MBSJ can issue a compound to the offender with a maximum fine of RM300.”

Johary added that MBSJ tried to take the educational approach first by advising an offender, and the city council would take stricter action with enforcement if the problem persisted.

“Our enforcement officers patrol commercial areas daily to check on obstructions placed on public parking bays,” he said.

“Last year, we also carried out similar checks on three residential areas and one industrial area where the problem of obstructed public parking spaces is rampant.”

The four locations, all located in Seri Kembangan, are Pangsapuri Timur in Taman Bukit Serdang, Taman Universiti Indah, Pinggiran Putra and Taman Perindustrian Seri Kembangan.

Johary said based on the number of public complaints lodged, MBSJ would conduct a similar operation in Puchong Permai this year.

Meanwhile, Shah Alam mayor Dr Nor Fuad Abdul Hamid said the public could take photos and lodge a complaint with Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) if they came across obstruction of public parking bays.

“Parking bays that are rented by businesses such as vehicle service centres and car wash services are painted red.

“Those that are not painted red are meant for the public, and there should not be any obstructions placed there,” he said.

“MBSA enforcement officers regularly patrol commercial areas.

“This is not only to check on vehicles that do not pay parking fees, but also to check for obstructions at public parking spaces, especially during peak hours.”

He added that a business or company could rent a minimum of one public parking bay and a maximum of five parking bays.

The rental and deposit charges to rent a parking bay vary, depending on the number of bays required and type of business, such as restaurant, corporate office, car workshop, car accessories shop, budget hotel, supermarket, bank, kindergarten or clinic.

It ranges from RM300 per bay a month (rental and deposit) to RM400 for deposit per bay plus RM150 per month for the first bay and RM250 per bay for each subsequent bay.
