Selangor to hand out RM10,000 worth of 'e-ang pao' at state-level CNY celebration


THE Selangor state government is offering 2,000 electronic "ang pao" worth RM10,000 in total and ten electronic devices worth RM3,000 through the Wavpay e-wallet app for its Chinese New Year open house celebration.

The celebration will be held at Dataran Kemerdekaan in Shah Alam on Jan 28 from 3.30pm until 10.30pm.

Industry and Commerce Committee chairman Datuk Teng Chang Khim said that the electronic "ang pao" are redeemable for 2,000 attendees of the celebration.

“Guidelines will be provided for the attendees when they have installed the app at the event,” Teng said during a press conference at the Invest Selangor Bhd headquarters in Shah Alam.

Attendees will be required to scan a QR code to confirm attendance during the event.

On top of that, the public will have the chance to enjoy good food during the event as the host, in cooperation with Hijrah Selangor, will prepare a Chinese New Year feast for some 8,000 attendees, which is the expected amount of for the event.

“There will be 11 main performances from about 120 artists from 18 performing groups,” Teng added.

“Performances will include dragon dance, dialect performances, traditional Chinese opera, drum performances, jazz, wayang kulit and a choir,” Teng said.

“The Chinese New Year celebration will also have 60 booths showcasing various cultural handicrafts, decorative items and confectionaries.

“Other than that, food trucks and stalls will be assembled on the event day," he said.

Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) corporate and public relations division head Shahrin Ahmad said Persiaran Bandar Raya near Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam will be closed from Jan 24 to 29 due to the set up of tents and preparations for the celebration.

“However, four paid parking lots are available and will only be a 50m walk from the event.” He added.

Event attendees are allowed to park at four locations: the parking lot beside the Maybank tower and PKPS, the SACC Mall parking lot, as well as the Plaza Alam Sentral parking lot.

Shahrin also added that the Smart Selangor Buses numbered SA01 and SA02 can be utilised to reach Dataran Kemerdekaan on the day.

“The buses will be available from 6.30am until 10.30pm but there is a possibility it will be available until midnight,” he added.

Also in attendance at the press conference was Invest Selangor chief executive officer Datuk Hasan Azhari Idris.

Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin and Selangor MB Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, as well as state assemblymen and department heads, are also expected to attend the event.
