AT least 70 trees were uprooted or snapped during a thunderstorm in Cyberjaya, Selangor, on Monday evening, damaging vehicles and blocking roads.

Affected areas include Persiaran Multimedia, Persiaran Flora, Persiaran Fauna, Persiaran Rimba Permai, Persiaran Semarak Api, Persiaran Bestari and Taman Putra Perdana.

Sepang Municipal Council president Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain said 15 personnel from its Swift Action Team (Pantas) and contractors cleared the tree trunks andbranches in the affected areas.

“Personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department also helped.

“No injuries were reported. However, there is damage to the road and its fixtures,” he said.

Abd Hamid said several trees in Tamarind Square and Multimedia University compound were also damaged during the storm, but those areas were not under the council’s jurisdiction.

Sepang MP Aiman Athirah Sabu raised concern over the large number of trees that were affected.

In a Facebook post, she said some tree trunks and branches fell on vehicles.

“We are still experiencing unpredictable weather conditions. I hope the people will be vigilant and stay up-to-date with the weather report,” she said. — By VIJENTHI NAIR
