WHILE many are busy shopping for Chinese New Year essentials, couple Michelle Woo and Eric Lee were spotted taking a leisurely stroll along Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur.

They were back in Malaysia from Melbourne, Australia, to celebrate Chinese New Year with extended family and soak up the atmosphere in Chinatown.

“I have not visited Petaling Street for over 15 years, so my family brought me here.

“We bought dried meat to give as gifts to family and flowers for decoration.

“We hope to catch some lion dance performances and enjoy spending time with family after three years away,” said Woo.

Lee said he would be having a reunion dinner with his parents at their house in Petaling Jaya tomorrow night.

Ooi Yee Jia was there to buy some goodies before returning home to Kuantan, Pahang.

“I usually come here to buy festive stuff,” he said while buying kuih kapit (love letters).

Siblings Stacy and Chris Ng had split up to get as many things from their shopping list as possible.

Stacy said they wanted to buy fortune cookies as well as other sweets.

“Around 30 people in my family will be gathering in Sri Petaling tomorrow so we will not be rushing back to our hometowns like many others,” she said.

Petaling Street was also abuzz with mothers looking for last-minute ingredients to cook Chinese New Year meals.

Mother-of-four Kylie Leong who is from Kuala Lumpur, said she would usually buy fresh produce a day before the reunion dinner.

“There are many traditional shops that sell items for the celebration.

“I plan to buy fresh flowers as well as fermented beancurd and dried scallops,” said the financial planner.
