Enforcement on illegal traders at several markets

DBKL and MPS officers seizing the goods by illegal traders.

KUALA LUMPUR City Hall (DBKL) and Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) jointly conducted a raid at Pasar Harian Selayang, Jalan Selayang Baru and Pasar Borong Kuala Lumpur to weed out illegal traders operating in the area.

In a press statement, DBKL said enforcement personnel from both local authorities seized the vegetables and fruits left by the illegal traders who fled the scene when the officers conducted checks at Jalan Selayang Baru and Pasar Harian Selayang.

Meanwhile, at Jalan 1/3A, Jalan 2/3A and Jalan 6/3A near Pasar Borong Kuala Lumpur, DBKL officers seized five illegal stalls selling vegetables and fruits. The traders, comprising three Malaysians and two Myanmar nationals, were operating without permit.

The authorities also sealed a business premises under Section 101(1)(v) of the Local Government Act 1976.

Aside from the operation against illegal traders, DBKL issued 20 compounds Road Traffic Rules 1959 and Road Transport Act 1987 for various traffic offenses including obstruction as well as two compounds under the Licensing of Hawkers and Food Placement (Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur) By-laws 2016 (UUK22) for appointing a helper without a permit.

The statement also said that DBKL would not compromise on the enforcement action and would act against persons trading illegally at the wet markets.

All confiscated goods were transported to DBKL's warehouse in Taman Miharja Cheras for documentation and further action.

Earlier this week, a viral Tiktok video showed a local man expressing his disappointment at the lack of enforcement against foreign traders at the Selayang Wholesale Market.

The video, which is two minutes 46 seconds long, had garnered two million views at press time.

Batu MP P. Prabakaran also thanked both authorities in a Facebook post for their timely enforcement.

"This is a worsening issue as the locals should be given the business opportunity and premises around the market.

"There is no doubt that there are still people who want to make a quick buck by renting out or giving business licenses to foreigners.

"This should be stopped immediately," he said.
