International travel fair returns next month with 12 participating companies

VIETNAM and countries in Europe remain popular holiday destinations among Malaysian travellers, according to the Malaysian Chinese Tourism Association (MCTA).

Its Johor chapter chairman Edwin Tay said this was based on the sales of travel packages at the Malaysia International Travel Fair (MITM Fair) organised by the association last July.

“We expect packages to these destinations, as well as Taiwan and Japan to continue selling well at our upcoming MITM Fair from March 3 to 5,” he said.

This time around, Tay said there would be 12 travel companies with 80 booths offering travel packages as well as lucky draw prizes worth about RM50,000 to be won.

“When we opened the registration to participants last month, all the booths were snapped up within 30 minutes, so this is a positive sign for the tourism industry.

“We are also targeting a sales value of RM4mil from the three-day event at Sutera Mall, Johor Baru,” he said in a press conference.

With China lifting its travel restrictions on Jan 8 after three years of Covid-19 isolation, Tay expects to see a lot of interest in holiday packages to China.

He said the Jiangsu Tourism (Singapore and Malaysia) Promotion Centre and Tokushima Prefecture Tourism Board would be participating in the travel fair to promote the respective destinations in China and Japan.

“The Jiangsu promotion centre will set up a thematic booth for visitors to get a feel of the province’s attractions, history and culture.

“Visitors have a chance to put on traditional Chinese hanfu costumes and snap photos at the booth, as part of the centre’s promotional activities,” he said, adding that entry to the MITM Fair is free.
