Sarawak government representatives will be visiting the Netherlands at the end of this month to discuss a solution to the flood problem in Sibu.

“The Dutch government has agreed to provide technical assistance to Sarawak to resolve the flood issue in Sibu,” said SUPP president Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian at the political party’s Chinese New Year gathering.

Dr Sim, who is Sarawak Deputy Premier, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg had allocated RM1bil for the Sibu development master plan that included the flood mitigation project.

“According to the government’s plan, hundreds of land parcels will be included in the reconstruction plan, of which about 50 will be used for lakes,” he said.

With such an ambitious project coming up, he advised Sibu residents to continue staying put.

“Do not move to Kuching but buy property here as the town will flourish with the implementation of the Sibu development master plan,” he said.

Dr Sim, who is also Sarawak Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister, said the state had undergone great changes in the past 10 years, gaining political and economic independence in the process.

He highlighted that the state was registering a healthy economic growth.

Sarawak’s income increased from RM7bil in 2018 to RM11.9bil in 2022, he said.

Sarawak’s oil has brought in RM1.2bil in revenue in the past five years, he noted.

“Sarawak government makes money for the state and the next generation.

“During the Covid-19 pandemic, the state launched a series of aid packages of up to RM6.7bil to help people and businesses survive in the difficult time,” he added.

Dr Sim said Sarawak’s goal was to become a strong, inclusive and environmentally friendly state by 2030.

Also present at the event were Pelawan and Bukit Assek assemblymen Michael Tiang and Joseph Chieng.
