NEWLY elected Malaysian Students’ Council of Australia (Masca) national chairman Ooi Shiao Lu aims to strengthen the student community with an in-person event.
The chairman plans to organise the council’s flagship event – Australian Network Leaders Summit (ANLS) – in Kuala Lumpur during the university break.
“After several years of connecting virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s time to have an in-person ANLS,” said Ooi.
“We will not only engage with Malaysian students from Australia but as many Malaysian students as possible to network and strengthen our student community.”
Ooi is pursuing her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Melbourne, double majoring in politics and sociology.
Masca represents more than 20,000 Malaysian students in Australia.
It works closely with the respective state chapters, the Malaysian student organisations across Australian universities, and Education Malaysia Australia.
It also assists Malaysian students and engages with them through flagship events like ANLS and Suara Muda.
Last year, Masca played a frontline role in bringing back postal ballots from Malaysians residing in Australia to Malaysia during the 15th General Election.
It also supported Malaysian students affected by the Queensland floods.
Ooi believes in always being open to new experiences and lifelong learning.
“No matter what your age or the point in life you are at, you must continue to grow and be open to new things,” she said.
On her plans, Ooi, 20, said she would continue what Masca had always been doing – supporting Malaysian students and being ready to tackle issues that may arise.
“I also encourage Malaysian students in Australian universities to join our team when we open our NET recruitment programme soon,” she said.
