Unwanted electronic devices like laptops and smartphones should not be thrown out with domestic waste but should be disposed of properly through ewaste collection centres.

To encourage people to discard their devices responsibly, Bukit Gasing assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran has set up three ewaste collection bins through a collaboration with Blue Bee Technologies.

“The three bins are located on the pavement outside PJ Palms Sports Centre, Lorong Sultan in PJ New Town; outside Public Bank at Jalan Pasar 1/21, PJ Old Town and the Rukun Tetangga Centre, Jalan 14/26, Section 14 (next to the field) in Petaling Jaya.

“Much thought was put into choosing the locations as we want to make disposal of ewaste more convenient,” he said after unveiling the collection bin at PJ Palms Sports Centre.

“We hope that by setting up these collection bins, less ewaste will enter landfills and pollute the environment.

“Ewaste contains many toxic elements like mercury and lead,” said Rajiv.

PJ Palms Sports Centre general manager Yeap Eu Juan said it was a great initiative as there was a pressing need to stop electronic items from entering the solid waste stream.

“It is clear that ewaste is the fastest growing trash stream.

“We need collection facilities like this to tackle this environmental issue,” he added.
