His extreme fondness for carbonated drinks proved costly for former factory worker Zainudin Sidek who was diagnosed with diabetes.

His condition became chronic and six years ago, the 51-year-old from Felda Sungai Behrang, Behrang, had his legs amputated.

“I would drink more than five cans or bottles a day.

“If I couldn’t consume the drinks, I would not feel complete,” he said after receiving a wheelchair during the Harmony Programme at Hospital Slim River.

Zainudin is now jobless and his mother, 70-year-old Normah Awang Kechil, is helping him with his daily needs.

He hopes those who like to drink sugary carbonated drinks excessively will learn from what happened to him.

“Lead a healthier lifestyle if you love yourself,” he said while also thanking the programme organiser for the wheelchair.

The programme, organised by the hospital and the Perak National Unity and Integration Department, was opened by state health and national integration committee chairman A. Sivanesan. Also present were department director Mansor Mohd Hashim and hospital director Dr S. Sivanandarajah.
