Penang government will provide RM100,000 to help one of the oldest Tamil schools in the state.
The special allocation will help SJK (T) Subramaniya Barathee construct a four-storey building, which Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said would be equipped with a computer and science laboratory, art room and more classrooms.
“I hope the allocation can assist in some way as the construction cost is about RM2.5mil,” Chow said at a charity dinner at Sunshine Square in Bayan Baru to commemorate the school’s 70th anniversary.
“I hope more non-governmental organisations (NGOs), companies and good Samaritans will step forward to assist as the school still needs more funds,” he said.
He then presented the state’s allocation to the school’s headmistress Mageswary Kunjappa.
She told Buletin Mutiara that the 70-year-old school first operated in Gelugor before moving to Bukit Gambir in 2014.
“The original school building in Gelugor was just a hall used by a drama troupe performing at a temple nearby.
“The current school building in Bukit Gambir has nine classrooms, a laboratory and a library.
“Enrolment has increased from 208 pupils in 2015 to 340 pupils this year.
“With the increase, we need a new building.
“We hope that more NGOs and good Samaritans will assist us in this project,” she said.
