PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to announce the appointment of Kuala Lumpur mayor next week, says the premier’s political secretary Azman Abidin.
“Hopefully by next week, we'll know whether a new mayor is appointed to helm Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) or that former mayor Datuk Seri Mahadi Che Ngah’s tenure is extended.
"So far, we have shortlisted about 10 candidates, including the four current DBKL executive directors, former DBKL executive directors as well as candidates outside DBKL.
"They will go through a vetting process to find the most suitable candidate for the position,” he told StarMetro on Wednesday (April 5) after receiving the memorandums submitted by Selamat Kuala Lumpur (SKL) and the Kuala Lumpur Resident Associations Coalition+ to voice their feedback on the Kuala Lumpur Structural Plan (KLSP) 2040 at Menara DBKL, Jalan Raja Laut, Kuala Lumpur.
When asked about the delay in the announcement of KL Mayor, Azman said it would not affect DBKL's day-to-day operations.
“Rest assured, the four directors and Federal Territories Department secretary-general can carry out functions of the mayor in the absence of a mayor as stated in the Federal Capital Act 1960.
"I think previously, there was no mayor for more than two weeks, so there’s no issue," he said.
Mahadi's tenure ended on March 31.
