RESIDENTS of SS25A are happy that the park in Jalan SS25/9, Petaling Jaya, has undergone some much-needed upgrades.
It is one of six public parks in the neighbourhood that are over 40 years old.
The upgrading works cost Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) RM370,000, said councillor John Leong.
The project started in November 2022 and took four months to complete.
The project, he said, included construction of a new 220m-long jogging track, placing a new rubber mat for the playground, building a new gazebo, adding six new benches as well as repainting the existing slides and eight benches.
“Some landscaping work was also done to allow more sunlight access and reduce the mosquito population,” added Leong.
SS25A Kawasan Rumah Tetangga (SS25A RT) committee member LT Hong said that before the upgrade, the park grounds would get soggy every time it rained.
“Some wouldn’t use it because it didn’t have a proper walkway and there were lots of mosquitoes,” he added.
SS25A RT treasurer Valerie Goh said residents were fortunate to have a few parks in their neighbourhood and would visit whichever that was nearest to them.
“The Jalan SS25/9 park is used the most as it is also a shortcut between the shops (around Plaza Mayang) and Kelana Jaya LRT Station.
“But I think more people will use it for recreation now that it has been upgraded,” she added.
Bandar Utama assemblyman Jamaliah Jamaluddin, who was present during a press conference to announce the upgrading details, said her office would engage with residents’ groups prior to carrying out any park upgrades.
“It’s important to find out from them who the regular users are and the facilities they want for their parks.
“For example, certain exercise equipment can only be used by certain age groups. Some people may prefer a sports court without a roof,” she said.
Jamaliah said having a jogging track at the Jalan SS25/9 park would make it safer for residents to walk or jog, rather than taking to the roads which had fast-moving vehicles.
She said two more SS25 parks were expected to be upgraded this year under the state-level Projek Penyayang Selangor initiative.
