Kristang food, dances to celebrate Easter in Melaka

Kessler says he wants to make this an annual event to increase appreciation for Kristang culture and cuisine.

IN Melaka, the celebration of Easter this weekend will be lively as the cuisine and traditions of the Kristang (Melaka Portuguese community) will be a highlight at Majestic Hotel.

To round up the Holy Week ceremonies and processions, the hotel is offering a special package called “Kristang Easter Gateway” until Monday.

“This is the first time there is a package by a hotel for those celebrating Easter Sunday tomorrow,” said Majestic Hotel’s Comprador Alvin Kessler.

Kessler said there will be dance and cultural performances today in addition to other attractions associated with the local Portuguese community.

He said a big crowd, especially Singaporeans, is expected to spend the Holy Week in Melaka and he wanted to create a new experience for tourists coming over to the city during the weekend.

“I will turn this package into an annual event for tourists to appreciate and cherish the unique Kristang culture and cuisine.”

Kessler said the Majestic Hotel is the right place as it's situated close to the Church of St Peter and is also a heritage building.

He said the building, which is a historical landmark here, was built in 1929 and turned into a hotel in 1955. -- By RSN MURALI
