MISSING security bollards installed along the back lanes of Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, were discovered inside a sump drain nearby.
The concrete bollards were placed at the back lanes to prevent people from parking their vehicles there and to stop motorcyclists from entering the area.
They were also meant to keep roadside traders from operating in the back lanes.
Local Agenda 21 (LA21) secretariat and coordinator A. Ghani Mohamed said the Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad back lane where the bollards were removed was the second phase of a beautification project by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
“Someone went to a lot of trouble to remove the bollards that were cemented to the ground,’’ he added.
Brickfields Rukun Tetangga chairman SKK Naidu said throwing the bollards into the drain was very irresponsible of the vandals as the sump drains were a measure to prevent flooding.
A DBKL spokesperson said the matter was being investigated.
This was not the first time that vandals have destroyed security bollards in the city.
In 2021, several bollards in and around the city centre were damaged within months of being installed.
They were installed in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and along Jalan Ampang to keep motorcycles and pedestrians off the walkways. -- By BAVANI M
