RESIDENTS in Taman Subang Indah in Petaling Jaya are angry over the installation of a massive electronic billboard near their homes which they claim is an eyesore and a safety concern.
They are also upset that over 20 mature trees along Jalan PJS 10/2 were chopped or pruned to prevent any obstruction of the newly-erected billboard.
Longtime resident Sidek Abdul Majid said they were not informed about the electronic billboard.
He said there was also no Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) notice board to indicate the placement of the billboard or that trees would be chopped due to the project.
He also said the residents’ views were also not gathered before the billboard was upgraded from 2D to LED.
“About a month ago the 2D billboard was changed into an LED billboard. Heavy machinery was brought in for the piling works for the billboard which is situated close to the houses.
“The billboard is on a green belt next to the New Pantai Expressway (NPE).
“We have a few safety concerns as the billboard is just a few metres away from the row of houses,” said Sidek, who is worried about the possibility of the giant structure collapsing or catching fire.
He also complained that the trees were haphazardly chopped, leaving just stumps.
“It is upsetting that many trees were chopped down for this,” he added.
Some 11 Merawan Siput Jantan trees (Opia ororata) and 12 Yellow Flame tree (Peltophorum pterocarpum) were chopped.
He said MBPJ had a responsibility to ensure public safety and opinion were taken into account when approving such projects.
Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Azhan Md Amir, who promised to look into the matter, said the city council had clear guidelines on the do’s and don’ts regarding the placement of LED billboards.
