FOOD waste from Selangor Ramadan bazaars has increased by 45% this year compared to last year, said domestic waste collection and public cleansing agency KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM).

In a statement, it said that 73.67 tonnes of food waste were generated each day during the Ramadan month covering seven municipalities, compared to 50.78 tonnes during the same period last year.

“The jump in food waste could be attributed to the increase in stalls and traders at Ramadan bazaars in Selangor this year, in comparison to 2022,” the company said.

KDEBWM is tasked to collect waste from Ramadan bazaars across seven jurisdictions: Shah Alam and Subang city councils, and Sepang, Selayang, Kuala Langat, Kajang and Klang municipal councils.

“The most significant increase in the number of stalls is in Klang, where there are 1,331 more lots than last year, generating 16.5 tonnes more food waste per day.

“Waste at Ramadan bazaars in Petaling Jaya, Hulu Selangor, Kuala Selangor, Ampang Jaya and Sabak Bernam is managed by the respective councils,” said KDEBWM.

Meanwhile, Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) has initiated a “Appreciate Food, Avoid Wastage” campaign following the increase in food waste during the month.

“The campaign serves to raise awareness among the public to be more conscious about what they buy to avoid food wastage,” MPS said in a statement.

A banner with the campaign slogan and tips to avoid waste have also been put up at 28 bazaar locations in Selayang.
