IN THE spirit of Ramadan, volunteers gathered to cook and distribute bubur som som, a Malay custard-like dessert cooked in thick coconut milk, to 450 households in Bukit Naga, Section 32, Shah Alam, Selangor.
Organised by the Kota Raja PKR women’s wing in collaboration with the residents’ representative council of Zone 10 and 13, the effort also involved Pusat Wanita Berdaya volunteers.
Eighteen volunteers helped to stir three large pots of the rice flour, cassava flour, sugar and coconut milk mixture for hours.
Shah Alam City councillor Saribanon Saibon said the volunteers were there from 10am to 3pm as the mixture had to be stirred consistently.
“It is a Malay tradition to cook bubur som som. We have the support of non-Muslims from our women’s wing to cook the dessert.
“Two pots were made according to the original recipe while one was cooked with pandan flavouring.”
Saribanon said that each household was given two containers of bubur som som.
PWB member Iswary Selvanayagam, 41, said it took about five hours just to combine all the ingredients while stirring the mixture.
“It was fun learning how to cook the dessert. I enjoyed the experience and have learnt a new recipe,” she said.
Another volunteer, Lalitha S. Veerappan, 46, said she was glad to help her Muslim friends cook bubur som som.
“It was gratifying to know that what we cooked would be enjoyed by those who would consume it as a dessert to break their fast,” she said.
Elsewhere in Klang, 30 orphans in Kampung Pendamar Indah 2, were treated to a scrumptious home-cooked meal for their breaking of fast.
The Pendamar Indah 2 PKR branch (Operations Unit) organised the iftar meal for the orphans at the Pendamar Indah 2, Klang Municipal Council multipurpose hall.
Saribanon said, “With the help of 10 women and Kota Raja PKR Youth, we made ayam masak lemak cili padi and mixed vegetables for the children.
“Our team cooked some 300 packs that were given to residents in the area.”
The children also received duit raya.
