Flood mitigation project to start soon in Sibu village

Floodss are a frequent occurrence in Kampung UsahaJaya Baru. Filepic shows Tourism Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing (left), who is also Bintulu MP, assessing the situation during a previous flood.

THE perennial floods affecting Kampung UsahaJaya Baru in Sarawak should be a thing of the past once a flood mitigation project is completed.

The kampung is located in a peat swamp, which makes it prone to flooding.

“Work on the project is expected to commence in the second half of this year,” said Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng at a ceremony to hand over dates to Masjid Al-Muhajirin and Masjid Al Ansar in Sibu, Sarawak.

“The tender process is completed so now we are waiting for DID (Drainage and Irrigation Department) to appoint a contractor for the project.

“I hope the work can start as soon as possible,” he said.

Chieng also pledged to allocate a rural transformation programme (RTP) grant for the maintenance of mosques annually.

“Last year, I allocated RTP grants worth RM300,000 for road upgrading and another RM300,000 for drainage maintenance.

“Implementing agencies such as Sibu Municipal Council and DID must ensure these projects run smoothly,” he said.
