THE undergraduates of Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) raised RM6,400 through a food carnival held within its campus in Tanjung Bungah, Penang.
Proceeds from the one-day event known as “Foodtopia” were donated to the Children’s Protection Society, an institution that reaches out to the less privileged community.
Event vice-president Tan Foo Waei said 23 students from the public relations course were involved in the fundraising event as part of their coursework.
“We conducted a survey among students and many preferred a food event to be held on campus.
“After planning for two months, we managed to set up 11 booths that offered a variety of food.
“Our initial target was to raise RM5,800 but we managed to get RM6,400 in the end,” he said at the event that was launched by TAR UMT deputy head Lim Thean Peng.
There were stalls selling desserts, noodles and snacks apart from products showcased by sponsors and a lucky draw station.
The university’s Department Of Communication Penang lecturer Azrel Zairul Izma Zamri said the project was planned based on UN Sustainable Development Goal 2, to create a world free of hunger by 2030, and Goal 3, which is to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for everyone.
“We wish to give something back to society through an event organised by students themselves, besides exposing them to external collaborations.
“They will be evaluated by their departments involved in organising the event,” he said.
