Sibu market enhanced with addition of festive arch

The arch built for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Gawai Dayak celebrations.

VISITORS to the iconic Sibu Central Market in Sarawak will be greeted by a large Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Gawai festive arch.

The arch costing RM3,000 was sponsored by the Sibu Central Market Hawker Association.

The central market is said to be the largest in the state, housing over 1,200 traders.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) market and petty traders standing committee chairman Albert Tiang said at the launch that the arch was to mark the Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Gawai Dayak celebrations.

“We wanted to bring the festive mood to the market and wish all our Muslim friends ‘Selamat Hari Raya’ and our Iban Dayak friends ‘Selamat Hari Gawai’,” he said.

SMC deputy chairman Bujang Abdul Majid said that with the dates for the two festivals being close enough together, they wanted to combine the festive greetings.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri begins today while Hari Gawai will be celebrated on June 1 and 2.
