THAILAND’S Songkran water festival attracted a few thousand people to celebrate the fun occasion at the Kuala Lumpur Wellness City event in Bukit Jalil.

The SongkranMY 2023 event was launched on April 9 and a second session followed a week later.

The event, initiated by sportswear company Gear Up and organised by sports club Ebakz Sports, was held in collaboration with KL Wellness City and Kbox Karaoke. There were also performances by local performers.

The aim is to provide opportunities for youths to showcase their talent and celebrate cultural diversity.

Another of Gear Up’s goals is to promote an active lifestyle among youths.

The sessions featured the Fun Hour, which ran from 10am to 2pm, and the Party Hour from 6pm to10pm.

These events attracted about 1,000 people on each occasion as the activities stretched from morning into the night.

It featured three categories; wet zone, party zone and feed zone.

The wet zone was designed for games and activities featuring a water slide and pool.

There were also performances of beatboxing, dancing, singing, rapping, Zumba and deejays live in action as the fitness programme emphasised on cardio and Latin-inspired dance.

The feed zone was where people took a break and sampled the food which included vanilla crepe and Da Long Yi Hotpot.

There, they also shopped for sportswear from Hypergear.

The hot weather did not deter visitors from bringing along their family members.

One of them, manager Christine Tan, 45, said the event was “fun and engaging” for her and her family.

“As much as it is a water festival inspired by Thailand’s Songkran, it is also like a sporting event here,” said Tan.

Another visitor, Loi Pennie, 22, who came with a friend, said it was their first time taking part in the Songkran festival.

“Not only did we have fun, especially at the wet zone, but we also made new friends,” she said.

“This event can educate Malaysians about Thailand’s water-splashing culture and the meaning behind it.”

The event’s strategic partner is Champion Group, and the supporting partners are MRCA Youth, BNC, SME Malaysia and World Gourmet.

Among the performers at the event were Laelow, beatboxers Zed Aitch and Bassic, Kuna, 7iffy, Chillseng, Lufferluis, Notseanchan, Vincent, Bing and Reymi Tham and Sensational Group.
