IN a bid to instil greater awareness of the needs of persons with disabilities and encourage participation, the seventh Run for a Chance (both a virtual and physical run) will be held in two cities from National Day to Malaysia Day.
The physical runs will be held at Educity Sports Complex in Johor Baru to mark National Day on Sept 9, and at Kepong Metropolitan Park in Kuala Lumpur to mark Malaysia Day on Sept 16.
For the virtual run, participants can complete either 3km or 30km through cumulative runs anytime and anywhere from Aug 31 through Sept 16.
The founder of Lovely Disabled Home, Lum Kok Kiang, hopes the public will take this opportunity to contribute to the underprivileged as well as help them overcome some of the challenges they are facing.
He said he hoped that the persons with disabilities community could interact more with society through the charity run.
With this, he has called on the public to join out of love, give a helping hand and work together to build a “loving and caring” society.
“The registration fee for Run for a Chance is RM70 and we are offering an early bird price of RM55 for those who register by May 31,” said Lum.
“In encouraging our disabled friends to join us for the event, they can register at a discounted rate of RM30.”
Lovely Disabled Home was founded in 2005.
It is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation that is now in its 18th year of operation.
Over the past 17 years, the number of persons with disabilities who passed through the home and worked in workshops has increased from six to 68.
“The needs of the community has made Lovely Disabled Home carry out more social responsibility programmes.
“The main reason for organising this run is to raise funds for our 2024 operating costs of RM200,000 for 2024.
“This year’s Run for a Chance was launched on April 8 through its Facebook page – Lovely Disabled Home.
“Besides fundraising, we are also promoting the Lovely Disabled Home’s own branding – LDH socks.
“Lovely Disabled Home launched its own brand of socks in 2015 to provide more job opportunities (sock packaging) for workshop members as well as job stability and self-value enhancement.
“Let’s all join the physical Run for a Chance this year.
“For those who wish to join the virtual run, there is no restriction on the running venue,” said Lum.
He said between 2020 and 2022, Run for a Chance attracted participants from the US, Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and several other countries.
“So, invite your colleagues and friends to run with us at the same time, but in different places,” added Lum
