Motorists had a chance to get their vehicles checked before heading back to their hometowns for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, thanks to a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.

The Balik Kampung Vehicle Inspection campaign organised by Berjaya Sompo Insurance Bhd and Persatuan Wakil-Wakil Insuran Am Malaysia (Perwakim), together with Puspakom Sdn Bhd, was aimed at assisting owners to check their vehicles before the festive celebrations.

The vehicle check-up campaign was held at Eco Ardence in Setia Alam, Shah Alam in Selangor.

The voluntary vehicle inspection by Puspakom, which is the Malaysian government-appointed national vehicle inspection company, covered 25 check points including brakes, suspension, smoke emission, tyres and side slip test.

Puspakom deployed its mobile unit truck at the venue and used computerised equipment to inspect the vehicles.

All vehicle owners received an inspection report with readings which showed the performance of vehicle parts checked and the overall condition of the vehicle for reference.

In a press release, Berjaya Sompo chief executive officer Tan Sek Kee said: “Statistics from the police’s Op Selamat 19 recorded a high of 4,000 car accidents in Selangor during the Chinese New Year celebrations this year.

“With Hari Raya festivities in mind, we want our friends to return safely to their families.

“In line with Berjaya Sompo’s vision, we decided to work with Perwakim to organise the Balik Kampung Vehicle Inspection campaign as part of our CSR initiative.

“We are pleased to be able to sponsor the inspection of 90 cars by Puspakom to ensure everyone’s safe journey home.”

Perwakim president Chong Kok Wai emphasised the importance of preventive measures in car maintenance and driving.

“While there are many reasons why road accidents happen, we want to avoid what can be avoided.

“Car inspections before a long drive will help vehicle owners know that they have done the necessary,” said Chong.

Perwakim is an association for general insurance agents in Malaysia that was established in 2000.

Puspakom was set up in 1994 and provides door-to-door vehicle inspection services.
