Jalan Bukit Assek in Sibu, Sarawak, has long been a dengue hotspot but a solution is now in sight, much to the relief of residents there.
Poor drainage has been identified as the cause of the dengue problem in the area.
To eliminate these mosquito breeding grounds, two culverts will be built in Lorong Kapor 3 and another one in Lorong Oya 8 at a cost of RM50,000 under the Rural Transformation Project (RTP) fund.
The project also includes building crossovers for three houses along the road.
“Because of the collapse of these crossovers, the drain has been turned into a pond,” said Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.
“Water cannot pass through and this also leads to the accumulation of stagnant water.
“As such, we need to remove the collapsed crossovers and build a new culvert for them,” he said as he handed the project over to the contractor at the site.
He added that this project would also improve the drainage of water.
Chieng said RTP funds would be used for the project as the houseowners could not afford to repair the collapsed crossovers.
The project, he said, would take about three months to complete.
“I hope the contractor can start soon and finish it earlier,” he added.
