DEVOTEES thronged the Butterworth Buddhist Association to commemorate the birth, enlightenment and passing of Gautama Buddha.
They prayed, lit lotus-shaped candles and took part in the ritual bathing of the Buddha statue with fragrant water.
The bathing of the statue signifies cleansing of impurities.
Devotees were also seen chanting and taking part in prayers at the association’s premises in Mak Mandin, Butterworth, which was beautifully decorated with bright lights on Wesak Day.
Housewife Tan Shui Yee, 32, from Taman Bagan, Butterworth, who visited the temple with her son, said she prefers going on the eve of Wesak Day to avoid the crowd.
“I have been attending Wesak Day prayers since I was young,” said Tan, adding that she goes for the annual event to seek blessings for good health and prosperity from Buddha.
ISO consultant Cheok Chee Seong, from Butterworth, who was with his wife Lim Kheng Kheng, a customer service representative, and their sons Yi Kai, and Yi Bin, said the family came to pray for good health and peace of mind.
He said he has been praying for many years to seek divine blessings.
Dr M. Ganesh, from Kuala Lumpur was there with his wife R. Gomathy.
He said they were in Butterworth for a short holiday and came to attend prayers.
“We wanted to collect the holy water and get blessing of Lord Buddha.
“We have been paying homage to Lord Buddha on Wesak Day for 10 years in Kuala Lumpur,” he added.
