JOHOR Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar has paid RM10mil in tithes or zakat this year.

He handed over a cheque for the amount to Johor Islamic Council chief executive officer Ismail Abu, which was witnessed by Johor mufti Datuk Yahya Ahmad.

The cheque presentation was documented in a 1.53-minute video clip on His Majesty’s official Facebook page.

Muslims who meet the criteria are obliged to pay zakat, which is a form of income tax under Islamic law.

Separately, five of KPJ Healthcare Bhd’s hospitals in the southern region have contributed business tithes worth RM850,000 for the year.

The group’s officer in charge Norhaizam Mohammad said KPJ Johor Specialist Hospital contributed RM250,000, while other contributors were KPJ Puteri (RM150,000), KPJ Pasir Gudang (RM300,000), KPJ Kluang (RM50,000) and KPJ Bandar Maharani (RM100,000).

Its chief executive officer Serena Yong said the “Jom Masak Bubur Lambuk” programme, in its fifth year, gathered government agencies and corporate partners to prepare, cook and pack the food on hospital grounds.

“The bubur lambuk packs were handed out to patients, visitors and the public at various locations.”
