Author offers tips on leading a happy life in latest book

Selva says the book offers practical advice and helpful tips for readers to improve their quality of life.

HOW do you create a life that is fulfilling, meaningful and satisfying?

“It’s about finding purpose and joy in our daily experiences and cultivating a positive mindset that allows us to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and grace,” said T. Selva, author of the book Secrets of Happy Living.

“Attaining happiness cannot happen suddenly, it is a gradual process that demands purposeful actions and perseverance.

“Although achieving well-being is not always easy, especially when life is full of challenges and uncertainties, it is still possible,” said Selva who has released his sixth book.

He said “happy living” is not about always being happy or avoiding difficult emotions.

“It’s about finding a sense of balance and perspective and being able to experience the full range of human emotions with poise and compassion.

“The key to happiness is not achieving a specific goal or obtaining material possessions but cultivating mindful living,” said the former journalist and author of Vasthu Sastra, the Indian science of architecture.

Selva said there is no definitive set of values that universally applies to everyone’s secrets of happiness as different individuals have different priorities, perspectives and experiences.

“There are techniques, and anyone can apply these principles to live a happier and more fulfilling life,” he said.

Selva emphasised the importance of gratitude, positive thinking, forgiveness, removing worries and meaningful relationships in achieving happiness.

“Setbacks and problems are part of our daily life, and running away, avoiding or ignoring the woes are not the solutions because they will follow every person like their shadow.

“Finding ways to cope, handle, manage and ease the issues are the art of ‘happy living’ which everyone should learn and be aware of.”

He said one of the most significant secrets of “happy living” is gratitude for what you have.

Instead of focusing on what you do not have, he suggests focusing on what you do have and being thankful for it.

Expressing appreciation can make you feel happier and more content with life, Selva added.

“Mindfulness is the practice of being present at the moment and fully aware of your surroundings.

“It involves paying attention to your thoughts, feelings and sensations without judgement.

“Being conscious can help reduce stress and anxiety and improve your overall well-being.”

The author believes that positive thinking significantly impacts every individual’s level of happiness because it can improve their mood and increase their cheerfulness.

“When you focus on the good in life, you will attract positive things and experiences.

“Overcoming challenges and setbacks can build resilience, a sense of accomplishment and a belief in your abilities.”

Helping others is another method that can contribute to your happiness, he said.

“When you help others, you feel a sense of purpose and contentment.

“It can also help to improve your social connections and provide a sense of community.”

By incorporating these principles into your life, you can experience greater joy, satisfaction and well-being.

Selva’s passion is rooted in his belief that the principles of this ancient system can help people live more harmonious and rewarding lives.

The 50 chapters in the book offer practical advice and helpful tips for readers to improve their overall quality of life and cultivate happiness daily.

It also carries inspirational and motivational quotes to help guide readers to make decisions in their life, work and relationships.

Throughout the book, Selva draws on real-life case studies and anecdotes to illustrate his points.

Secrets of Happy Living is priced at RM35 and available online and at major bookstores.
