THE “Jalinan Kasih 3R PJKita” programme by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) is an effort to increase awareness of recycling and reusing of resources among residents.

Petaling Jaya deputy mayor Sharipah Marhaini Syed Ali said the implementation of the waste management programme would result in cost savings for the city council.

“We believe that this programme will not only benefit our city’s environment but also result in cost savings in waste collection management,” she said at the launch of the programme at PJ Eco Recycling Plaza in SS8.

The event also saw the handover of donations to needy families in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

She added that MBPJ targets to increase household participation in the recycling programme to 30% this year, with plans to expand the programme to more areas in the next two years.

Sharipah Marhaini, who also toured the recycling facility, said it recorded 6,150 visitors last year, with 85% taking part in programmes organised by strategic partners.

During this period, the recycling centre, which opened in 2019, also collected 48,030kg of recycled goods and 1,944 units of used goods.

Profits from the sale of used goods at PJ Eco Recycling Plaza reached RM25,166.30.

The money was put into the 3R trust fund and will be used for Petaling Jaya community programmes, added Sharipah Marhaini.

On the handover of donations at the event, MBPJ Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing director Zain Azly Abdul Rahman said the city council selected 11 families to receive items like furniture, electrical appliances and used clothing.

“The 11 families were selected based on their financial situation, living conditions and income,” he said.

Zain Azly added that a mobile recycling caravan would soon be launched in Petaling Jaya, giving residents the opportunity to donate and purchase goods directly.

There are 12 types of items that can be given to be recycled or reused at the PJ Eco Recycling Plaza.

People can drop off used items such as toys, magazines, stationery, clothes, plastic, aluminum tins, plastic bottles, ewaste, furniture and used cooking oil.
