THOUSANDS thronged the Special Children’s Centre in Grove Road to do their bit to raise funds for 11 special needs schools and homes throughout Penang.
The Gift of Love Charity Food Fair featured about 60 stalls selling Korean fried chicken, satay, char koay teow, bubble tea and many other delicacies.
The one-day food fair was organised by the Service Civil International (SCI) Penang Chapter.
Also present were Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, his wife Tan Lean Kee and Ayer Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng who visited the stalls and chatted with visitors.
Chow, in his speech, said proceeds from the food fair would be divided equally among the special needs schools and homes which need help to operate.
“On behalf of the state, I pledge RM2,000 each to these 11 schools and homes, and also to SCI. I hope this small donation will help them in a big way,” said Chow.
SCI president A. Athimulam said the organisation hoped to raise at least RM55,000 from the fair.
SCI Malaysia is a non-governmental, non-profit and non-religious organisation. It has two branches in Penang and Kuala Lumpur.
Founded by Swiss engineer Pierre Ceresole in 1920, the organisation aims to bring together people of different backgrounds to undertake voluntary work for the community, with the aim to create understanding and respect.
