THE Sibu branch of the Malaysia Red Crescent Society (MRCS) needs a new ambulance to cater for the increase in the town’s population.

Its chairman Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee said, “The ambulance that we are using now is quite old as it was donated by a company 18 years ago.”

Chua was speaking after the launching the World MRCS Day celebration.

He said the organisation had so far collected RM180,000 for the new ambulance which costs RM200,000.

“We need around RM20,000 more. I think we will get our ambulance very soon.

“We are still considering whether to get a new one with basic facilities or a second-hand one equipped with all the facilities.

“We will seek advice from medical personnel.”

Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng encouraged more students to join the Sibu branch of MRCS as it offers help to the community, especially during disasters.

He said that students would gain a lot by joining the association.

“You will be trained on first aid which is a vital skill and you will also be able to save other people’s lives.”

During the celebration, Chieng also witnessed the handover of 12 air-conditioning units from sponsors to Sibu MRCS . – By ANDY CHUA
