AFTER being selected as a key event for the 2023 Selangor Unity Week celebrations, the Klang Executive Club (KEC) Unity Run has been renamed “Selangor Unity Run”.

The run will take place on May 27 at the PKNS headquarters along Laman PKNS in Shah Alam and will kick off the state-level celebrations which will continue at the main venue at Taman Tasik Shah Alam.

The KEC Unity run was first held in 2011 and has been held annually in the Klang Valley until the Covid-19 pandemic emerged.

This year’s Selangor Unity Run is organised by the Council of Justice of the Peace (JP) Selangor and JP Klang District as well as property developer Acmar Group.

JP Selangor president Datuk Ng Seing Liong said the event received overwhelming response when it opened for registration.

“The objective of the event is to foster more unity and cooperation in our multiracial community.

“We are glad to announce that 3,500 runners have signed up.”

Ng added that the organisers remain committed to continuing the run as an annual event to further bolster community relationships.

Joining the 5km fun run this year are 72 wheelchair participants who were selected by the Klang District Amateur Athletics Association and the state Welfare Department.

Participants will also be in the running for lucky draws at this year’s run with over RM10,000 in prizes up for grabs.

National Unity and Integration Department director Burhanuddin Daud said the organisers had done well to exceed their initial target of 3,000 participants.

“This shows that sports is a great platform to promote unity among Malaysians.

“I am sure that Selangor participants will be joined by many from other parts of the country.”

Burhanuddin also called for more groups to promote unity all over the country not only during Unity Week.

“Unity is a shared responsibility among Malaysians.”

The event is sponsored by the National Unity and Integration Department, Selangor Unity and Integration Council, Panasonic, Milo, 100 Plus and Gardenia.

Technical support is provided by I-Run, Royal Malaysian Police, Shah Alam City Council, Selangor Youth and Sports Department and the Malaysia Civil Defence Department.
