ROAD users plying Jalan Segambut Utara and Jalan Segambut Pusat are calling on Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to widen the road that leads to the intersection of Jalan Segambut.
This is mainly to accommodate the increasing traffic and heavy vehicles heading towards Jalan Segambut .
Social activist Yee Poh Ping, who uses the road frequently, said the road was initially designed to accommodate a small number of vehicles.
However, with rapid development in the city, the intersection can no longer handle the daily influx of vehicles, he said.
“Jalan Segambut Pusat is a busy industrial area that sees a constant flow of heavy vehicles and traffic in and out of the area daily.
“It is crucial that we widen the roads to accommodate the increasing number of vehicles and ensure a smooth flow of traffic,” he said at a press conference.
As the sidewalks at the road are exceptionally wide, Yee suggested that the size of the sidewalks and traffic islands approaching Jalan Segambut Utara/ Jalan Segambut Pusat be reduced.
He also urged DBKL to conduct an in-depth study on the intersection and widen it accordingly to facilitate a smoother flow of vehicles towards Kuala Lumpur, Segambut Dalam/Taman Sinar and Jalan Kuching from Jalan Segambut Utara/Jalan Segambut Pusat.
“The current road layout at Jalan Segambut Utara/Jalan Segambut Pusat intersection only allows for a single lane to turn left and right, which is difficult for heavy vehicles to navigate with the narrow road.
“To improve the situation, I propose that another lane be added from Jalan Segambut Utara/Jalan Segambut Pusat, and the size of the traffic island that obstructs traffic be reduced,” he said.
Yee said Jalan Segambut had multiple apartments and condominiums, with several more apartment projects in the pipeline that could further increase traffic in the area.
He hoped officers and engineers from the local authority would visit the area to get a clearer picture of the problem.
Yee said a wider road would benefit business operators in the industrial area and improve the safety of road users.
Muhd Amir Shah, 39, who lives in an apartment on Jalan Segambut said during peak hours, it would take him about an hour to reach the intersection of Jalan Segambut Pusat.
“It is good that someone is highlighting the issue as the intersection’s narrow road has always been an issue for road users.”
