WAWASAN Open University (WOU) and George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) are calling for people to take part in a poster competition on the adaptive reuse of historical military pillboxes located in Teluk Kumbar, Penang.
Organising chairman Prof Abdul Rashid Abdul Aziz said this competition, which is open to everyone, aimed to promote innovative ideas for the preservation and repurposing of these historical structures.
“I would like to encourage participants to think creatively while respecting the heritage value of the pillboxes. The proposals must not include alterations or demolition of the structures.
“Participants can incorporate the narrow perimeter of land surrounding the pillboxes in their adaptive reuse proposals, provided that it does not interfere with traffic flow.
“The proposals may also include recommendations for provision of electricity and water supplies to the pillboxes, which currently lack these amenities,” he told reporters.
Prof Abdul Rashid said this competition presented an exciting opportunity for individuals to showcase their creativity and contribute to the preservation of historical landmarks, adding that they look forward to receiving innovative entries that highlight the potential of adaptive reuse of pillboxes in Teluk Kumbar.
“Before the Teluk Kumbar pillboxes were restored, villagers used to hold bersanding ceremonies (wedding receptions) around them,” said Prof Abdul Rashid.

Image of the poster should be in JPG format, with dimensions of 594cm x 841cm and a resolution of 150dpi. The file size must not exceed 1MB.
