THE Balik Pulau Sports Complex in Penang has reopened for public use following a RM1.61mil upgrade to improve its facilities.

Penang youth and sports committee chairman Soon Lip Chee said the complex could now seat 1,500 spectators.

“The complex underwent two phases of upgrading last year – from April 5 to May 30, and Sept 6 to Dec 19 – and is now ready to host a variety of events.

“Phase 1 saw the upgrading of the dressing room, referee’s room, media conference room, CCTV system and lighting system.

“Sport facilities such as a futsal court that meets FIFA (Federation Internationale De Football Association) standards and four badminton courts were upgraded in Phase 2.

“The courts can also be used for other sports such as basketball, volleyball, sepak takraw and netball,” he said after visiting the facility.

Soon said the sports complex was a popular sports venue for organising sports tournaments and competitions such as the Maba Matrix Cup organised by the Malaysian Basketball Association (Maba) and the Malaysia Premier Futsal League.

“In June last year, the state through the Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP) organised the Penang Community Olympic Carnival at the complex in conjunction with World Olympic Day and has obtained recognition from the Malaysian Olympic Council.

“The programme managed to attract 2,000 people to participate,” he added.

Penang Stadium and Open Space Corporation (PSDKLPP) executive director Rashidah Jalaludin said upgrading of the sports complex was to ensure the comfort and safety of users.

“PSDKLPP is committed to continue studying and providing high-quality sports facilities to ensure that these are the top choice for Penangites for sports and recreational activities,” she said.
