The Star’s former northern hub office manager Chin Yoon Foo has received recognition from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) through the Meritorious Service Award 2022.

Chin, 70, who served Star Publications (M) Bhd (now known as Star Media Group) for 11 years from 1997 to 2008, is the sole Malaysian to get the award which honours his 40 years of involvement in the sport.

Chin said, “To receive the award, the candidate must have served the association continuously for more than 15 years and helped to organise international events.”

He said Kedah Badminton Association (KBA) president Datuk Teoh Teng Chor recommended him for the award to Badminton Association Malaysia (BAM) which had forwarded the recommendation to BWF.

He said he wanted to share the honour with KBA council members.

Chin joined KBA in 1983 and was elected as its vice-president.

He still holds the post and is also currently chairman of KBA’s tournament sub-committee.

Chin was formerly a Special Branch inspector based at the Regional Border Committee Office in Yala, southern Thailand, for 11 years.

He served the police force for 23 years.

Chin received the award before the start of the Malaysia Masters 2023 finals at Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur.

It was the 10th tournament in the 2023 BWF World Tour calendar and the second Super 500 event of the season.

BAM organised this tournament sanctioned by BWF.
