TEN former students of Ave Maria Convent Ipoh received recognition during the 41st Ave Maria Convent Alumni Association (AMCAA) anniversary dinner.

They were presented with the Inspirational and Outstanding AMCian Award 2.0 at the event held in the Perak capital city.

The recipients were Dr Cheah Pike See, Chu Chan Oi, Estee Pook, Datin Jade Hew, Datuk Dr Ker Hong Bee, Dr Koh Kai Yee, Kuee Sheau Shyuan, Natalie Sit Pooi Sze, Dr Serene Lock Sow Mun and Dr Tan Po Li.

The criteria for the award were based on their achievements, awards, inspirational stories as well as their contributions to society, including SMJK and SJK (C) Ave Maria Convent schools.

AMCAA president Moy Ooi Thye said the association received 23 recommendations for the award.

“All the nominees excel in their respective fields but we can only select 10,” she said during the dinner.

A Pride of Ave Maria Convent Honorary Award was also given to AMCAA advisor Datin Irene Lee.

Moy said Lee, who is also the board of governors chairperson for both schools, had contributed a lot.

“She has done so much for both schools and together with her fundraising team raised about RM2mil recently to rebuild the swimming pool.”

Moy said AMCAA had donated about RM527,000 to both schools between 2017 and 2023.

“We provided hand sanitiser for the safety of teachers and students, and gave RM23,000 for prevention measures during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We also raised about RM40,000 to subsidise the purchase of electronic equipment mobile data packages and tuition fees for needy students,” she said, while announcing that some RM70,000 would be donated to the schools.

The dinner was attended by about 700 guests who enjoyed a sumptuous spread and were kept entertained by several performances. — By IVAN LOH
