FOOD delivery riders can now rent an electric motorcycle for RM20 a day.
The rental scheme under the EVERgreen Rider Programme was launched by Kampung Tunku assemblyman Lim Yi Wei and Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) councillor Bryan Ng Yih Miin in SS2, Petaling Jaya.
Ng, who chairs the council’s P Hailing Taskforce, said affordable electric motorcycle rental was crucial as some riders faced problems such as low wages and difficulty in obtaining bank loans that hindered them from owning their own vehicles.
“The scheme provides them with an opportunity to increase their income and overcome financial barriers.”
He said the rental programme was a positive step towards creating a fair and inclusive society.
Ng said the RM20 rental included all maintenance costs, charges and insurance.
“This initiative is not just about helping our food delivery riders, but also about helping to improve our environment.
“By choosing electric motorcycles, we reduce carbon emissions and this helps improve the air quality in our cities,” he added.
Lim said the programme was initiated to show that electric vehicles could be affordable, cost-efficient and convenient for the B40 and lower M40 groups.
“One of the benefits of the electric motorcycle is that it can be charged up at any place that has a three-pin socket so riders have more flexibility,” she said, adding that she hoped the programme would become a model for other areas.
Eclimo Sdn Bhd chief operating officer David Chuah said 10 electric motorcycles would be available for rent at durian outlet Dking in SS2.
“We are planning to increase the number of electric motorcycles to possibly over 100, available at 10 to 20 locations.”
To rent one, he said riders could go to Dking to sign up and pick up the electric motorcycle.
“We will soon introduce a mobile app for renting the electric motorcycles, enabling riders to reserve and make payment online,” he added.
