Selangor working towards resolving first/last mile connectivity, says MB


SHAH ALAM: Selangor mobility, which is an initiative by the state government to improve the transportation system, has the potential to resolve the first and last-mile connectivity issue in the state, says the mentri besar.

Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the state has introduced the Demand Responsive Transit (DRT) as a pilot project to link the public transport network and ensure its sustainability.

“It would be able to connect people, reduce congestion and offer the answer to the longstanding first mile and last mile hurdle in public transport,” he said after officiating the Selangor Mobility Forum at the MBSA Convention Centre in Shah Alam on Thursday (June 15).

“We have allocated RM3mil in the rebranded Selangor mobility initiative that uses smart apps to better the public transportation in the state,” he added.

Aminudin said app-based services like the DRT would allow commuters to use public modes of transport to reach their destinations not plied by buses or rail network.

“Using this system, the routes and transport schedule will be coordinated following the passengers' request especially at peak hours,” he said.

Amirudin added that DRT travel routes and service is being run by the Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corporation under the Menteri Besar Incorporated.

“DRT is a six-month pilot project that is being handled by two companies, Asia Mobility Technologies Sdn Bhd and Badan Bas Coach Sdn Bhd.

“It will be assessed in a few zones before it is widened to other areas. I hope it will address the accessibility of public transport and make it easier for the movement of people in Selangor,” he said.

Aminudin said various initiatives were being carried out to ensure changes to public transportation go along with the government’s encouragement for the people to opt for public transport.

He said since 2016, the state has spent between RM25mil to RM30mil a year providing the Smart Selangor Bus and the number of passengers for the bus service has hit 61 million since its launch.

“Several local authorities have collaborated with private firms to provide micro-mobility like escooter to improve connectivity,” he said.
