Weekend brunch to look forward to

Satay makes a great accompaniment to drinks.

Standing strong after 30 years in the landscape of Bangsar’s shifting sands is Ronnie Q.

A permanent fixture close to Bangsar Village 2 at the end of Jalan Telawi 2, this pub is a popular meeting place for locals and regulars in the area.

Ronnie Q has always been known as one of the go-to places to gather and watch major sporting events live.

With its strategically placed TV monitors, customers are able to enjoy an evening of neighbourhood bonhomie watching sports over a pint.

But even an institution like Ronnie Q needs something new to offer once in awhile and cut to the present, there’s now a signage announcing a new weekend brunch in addition to the traditional pub offerings.

Ronnie Q continues to offer a variety of standard (albeit very Malaysian or Indian) pub fare, going the way of Mutton or Chicken Vaaruval, Chicken Chop, Chicken 65, regular pub favourites like chicken, lamb chops, various Malaysian favourites like Mee Mamak and Mee Hoon Goreng, as well as a variety of pizzas.

There’s also the WAK Satay stall in front of the pub serving beef, chicken and lamb satay, besides various snack bar options.

As for drinks, Ronnie Q maintains a traditional drinks menu, with a selection of basic beers on tap or bottle, including Tiger, Heineken, Guinness, Kilkenny, Apple Fox and Anchor.

They also offer a wide variety of bottled spirits and cocktails.

But it’s the new weekend brunch menu that’s really making the grade here, having started just a few weeks ago.

In collaboration with MiNCE, Ronnie Q is serving up some porkalicious pub grub from 10.30am to 2pm every Saturday and Sunday.

The pub’s original owner and landlord Ronnie Quay, who continues to run it until today, said: “It’s the first time we have opened the pub’s doors this early.

“The theme for the brunch revolves around pork sausages, which are special homemade sausages free from nitrates, preservatives and MSG.

“It’s probably the first pork sausage brunch in Bangsar ever.”

Among the offerings are British bangers and mash – homemade pork bangers served on a bed of creamy, luscious mash and beer gravy with a side of minty peas topped with sweet caramelised onion and mustard.

Other items include Italian Peperonata sausages, homemade German bratwurst and spiced patties.

Jasmin Ung of MiNCE, who produces these popular homemade sausages and has a passion for cooking, is present at the pub every weekend with her partner to personally cook and promote the menu.

Quay said it would appeal to pork lovers and is something that many people have been looking for – a pleasant, hearty weekend brunch in Bangsar.

As for the main hours of the evening, other than drinks and grub, the focus still remains for the most part on sports entertainment.

Though the next couple of months will see football season on its annual summer break, there is still the summer cricket season and tennis to keep sports fans engaged.

Just next month, there are the Ashes cricket series and Wimbledon tennis to enjoy.

There is also live music on Mondays from The Sidewalks led by Prasad on guitar/vocals, Wui Lin on vocals and Suresh on rhythms.

So whether you’re seeking a lively sports watching experience, a delicious pork sausage brunch or a relaxing evening with drinks and live music, it looks like Ronnie Q remains a firm standout in the ever-evolving atmosphere of Bangsar.
