Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Alliance For a Safe Community to collaborate on community and road safety programmes.

Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Azhan Md Amir said the NGO had extensive experience while its chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye was known for his social activism.

“The MoU is a good step to ensure Petaling Jaya’s surrounding environment is safe for its residents,” said Mohamad Azhan, who added that Lee would be advising MBPJ.

The mayor said this during MBPJ’s Occupational Safety and Health Day celebration at the city council’s Civic Hall in Petaling Jaya.

On the road safety programme, he said: “Petaling Jaya serves as a vital transit point between Kuala Lumpur and Shah Alam for a significant volume of vehicles travelling along the Federal Highway.

“With hundreds of thousands of vehicles traversing this route daily, ensuring the safety and well-being of residents and commuters becomes paramount.”

He said MBPJ was working with various stakeholders, including NGOs, police, Public Works Department (JKR) and educational institutions to enhance safety measures and promote community well-being.

“NGOs can become integral participants in the community and can provide feedback to the council, such as identifying potholes, which will require prompt repair and maintenance,” he said.

On ongoing programmes, Mohamad Azhan highlighted the successful collaboration with SMK Taman Medan.

“This partnership with the school involves comprehensive training on occupational safety and health aspects.

“Additionally, the school will undergo ISO 45001 certification process facilitated by Sirim Malaysia.

“If successful, SMK Taman Medan will become the first educational institution in the region to receive such certification,” he added.

At the celebration, 34 MBPJ officers from all departments and units were appointed occupational safety coordinators.

“These coordinators will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of our facilities,” said Mohamad Azhan.

“They will provide inspection reports, highlighting any damage or potential hazard that may compromise the safety of individuals,” he said.

He added that by doing so, the officers would contribute to creating a safer and more comfortable environment for everyone.
