SIBUJAYA township in Sibu, Sarawak, has picked up an award for architectural excellence for its Azman Hashim Community Sports Centre.
Donated to the Sarawak government by Azman Hashim Foundation, the sports centre is designed by Penang-based BYG Architecture Sdn Bhd in collaboration with Sarawak-based Kacapuri Architect Sdn Bhd.
It was built at a cost of RM14mil.
The award was given during Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia’s (PAM) 100th anniversary gala in Kuala Lumpur.
During the award ceremony, PAM lauded the key design features reflecting Sarawak’s harmonious and rich cultural tapestry.
It also praised the complex and expert bricklaying work for the centre.
Amcorp Group chief operating officer Azlan Baqee, when presenting the award to HDCam Sdn Bhd chairman Mohamad Asman Ahmad during a board meeting in Kuching earlier, said Amcorp Group was committed to developing Sibujaya into an even more vibrant and prosperous township.
“We have stayed true to Sibujaya through the years and we will continue to build this township with our partner HDCam for the benefit of the people,” said Azlan.
He said that with the masterplan conceptualised by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg when the latter was state Housing minister, SibuJaya’s road to success was laid.
Since its inception in the mid-1990s, Sibujaya has won many awards for its masterplan, residential homes and commercial developments. It has grown by leaps and bounds.
The township now has a population of about 40,000 people, its own fire station, police station, library, schools, banks and post office, among others.
Known also for its robust business community, SibuJaya serves as a focal point for surrounding towns, districts and longhouses in Sarawak’s central region.
